Update 51 for The Elder Scrolls Online lands on 28 September 2026, a week later than ZeniMax first said. Three things have moved out of 2026 altogether. The change came on 30 July in a letter from game director Nick Giacomini, which also covers recent changes at the studio.

If you have never played it: The Elder Scrolls Online is a fantasy game shared by what the letter calls "millions of players", and an update is a patch that adds new things and fixes old ones. Season One is the game's name for this stretch of the year and the content grouped inside it.

What changed

The letter puts a principle before a date: "quality experiences over calendar dates". Here is what that costs, in dates.

For Update 51 itself, the letter gives a new date and no old one. It "will now launch one week later, on September 28". The 21 September in the first column below is that week subtracted, not a date ZeniMax states.

Everything else in Season One runs as planned. The letter adds a Golden Pursuit campaign, which is a rotating list of in-game tasks that pay shop rewards, called "Straight to the Crate", from 20 August to 17 September. It also dates a High Seas of Tamriel event from 30 September to 14 October. Tamriel is the continent the whole series is set on. Season Two is dated 21 October 2026.

Our take: what it means for players

A week is not much. The rest of the list is, and the letter is more honest than it had to be.

Our pick for the biggest thing on the list is the Crimson Veldt. A trial is this game's word for a raid, which is a dungeon built for a large group. The letter says it is pushing boundaries with mounted combat, and it now moves into 2027 with no date attached. Our reading is that a feature this size sliding into another year with no date costs a studio trust it cannot buy back.

The class and combat rework is the quieter loss. A class is the kit of skills your character fights with. The letter says the studio is "targeting 2027 for the next refresh", and that it is discussing "some interim options for the classes still awaiting their full refresh".

A rework that leaves some classes waiting is a balance problem the whole time it runs, and that is our reading rather than the letter's. Stretch the window into 2027 and you stretch the problem with it. The people paying for that are the players still waiting on a rework. The studio context is in the letter too: organizational changes, departures, and a leadership arrangement in which Giacomini runs the studio alongside Josh Henderson. The letter links the schedule to those changes, and says the class refresh and the new trial are "highly complex". Our reading is that the studio context is more useful to know than the schedule itself, because it is the likeliest guide to the next one. Publishing it rather than letting a date slip quietly is the right call, in our view, and we would rather have this letter than none.

The dates, in order

• 28 September 2026. Update 51 and three-sided Battlegrounds.
• 30 September to 14 October 2026. High Seas of Tamriel.
• 19 October 2026. Greymoor, the chapter set in Western Skyrim, and the group versions of two dungeons, Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices, became free for all players. ZeniMax said so in its own post that day. The letter had dated the dungeons 12 October and Greymoor 9 November.
• 21 October 2026. Season Two, with those two dungeons in solo form.
• 9 November 2026. Markarth becomes free for all players, the date the letter gave; ZeniMax's 19 October post does not mention it.
• January 2027. Update 52, expected to carry the Jerall Pass zone for fighting other players.
• 2027, undated. Crimson Veldt, and the next stage of the class rework.
